History Review of KCC Sustainability

  • 2000 Political science lecturer petitioned for large city recycling bin, Krista organized students for recycling for each building (all pre-HI5 bill).
  • 2007 College  added to sustainability measures to our 2008-15 strategic plan
  • 2007 KCC Chancellor formed the sustainability committee on the recommendation of the Faculty Senate (Chancellor’s special committee)… selected  Carl Jennings as the Chair. Committe was made up of Faculty, Staff, Admin. and Students. Carl  was provided release time (only one semester) by Chancellor. First  projects included energy conservation (room labels for light switches), having Auxiliary services take over recylcling program and purchase recycling bins, and set up e-waste program.
  • 2008 Energy Audit of lighting and recommendations for Electronic Document Management. Earth Day initiated campus wide with outside vendors and student groups. Sustainability 101 initiated and presented at new faculty orientations and Earth Day. System-wide Sustainability Across the Curriculum conference at KCC
  • 2009 Earth Day, Film nights, Guest Speakers.
  • 2010 Explorations, a cross-disciplinary approach to sustainability (Sustainability Across the Curriculum) first launched, culminating in a publication of student essays and artwork.
  • System wide Energy Company Request for Proposals Review  (ECRP) process, selection of Johnson Controls
  • 2011 Johnson control JCI on board with energy. Focus of the committee switched to curriculum and development of the S-Designation. Introduction of Open Classroom Initiative during Earth Week.
  • 2012- Aug  Carl Jenning and Krista Hiser petitioned FS to Form Ad Hoc Committee 2012 petition.  Strong focus on S-designation and curriculum
  • Faculty senate met on October 1, 2012 and  passed a motion to establish a new ad hoc committee on sustainability to oversee  a S designation
  • Nov. 30 2012, first meeting of the FS Ad Hoc Committee
  • 2013 – Jan  First semester of  FS Ad Hoc Committee for Sustainability Wendy Kuntz Chair.
  •  “S” is for Sustainability Kapi’olani’s plan for creating an S Designation recognizing curricular integration of sustainability content Submitted to FS by ad hoc committee on Sustainability Date: 25 February 2013
  • 2013/2014 Committee primary focus on S-designation
  • 2014/2015  New Vice Chancellor for Administrative Affairs (interim then permanent on Fall 2014).
  • 2013/2014 Committee continues to focus on S-designation.  Also now shift to also look at energy and sustainability measures on campus. KCC becomes a founding member of the National Council on Science and the Environment’s Community College Affiliate program.
  • August 2015 – First full semester as Standing Committee.
